The study of the science of Surface Chemistry began more than 400 hundred years ago with scientists and mathematicians like Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton , Laplace and Thomas Young doing pioneering work in explaining the behavior of surface tension, capillary action, wetting and interfacial tensions.

Interfacial processes are an important part of our day to day modern life. Surfactant behavior in a detergent solution, cosmetics industry, paints and varnishes, semiconductor and plastics industries, biotechnology and dental sciences, all depend on the science and understanding of surface tension.

Dynamic Contact Angle Meter and Tensiometer

The DCAT 11 is used for the software-controlled measurement of

		the contact angle of powders and fiber bundles and the adsorption behavior of liquids on wettable materials according to the modified Washburn method
		the dynamic contact angle and the surface energy of prismatic and cylindrical samples according to the Wilhelmy method
		the dynamic contact angle and the surface energy of prismatic and cylindrical samples according to the Wilhelmy method
		the critical micelle formation concentration of surfactants (CMC) according to the Wilhelmy Plate method, Lenard Frame method or the Du Noüy Ring method with automatic ring correction according to Huh & Mason, Zuidema & Waters and Harkins & Jordan

as well as for fully automated reproducibility measurements.

The DCAT 11 consists of the basic instrument with the following technical equipment:

		High-precision electrodynamically compensated weighing system with automatic calibrating function
		Software-controlled motorized height positioning of the sample vessel with variable speed
		Integrated measuring and control electronics with digital thermometer
		Graphical display for weighing data, temperature and other measuring status
		Serial RS 232C interface with PC connecting cable
		Illuminated sample chamber with connection for inert gas
		Sample vessels of borosilicate glass available with diameters 50,70,100 mm
		Pt100 temperature sensor for the installation in the temperature control unit
		Du Noüy ring RG 11, made of platinum-iridium to DIN 53914
		Wilhelmy plate PT 11, made of platinum-iridium to DIN 53914

It is prepared for the installation of a liquid temperature control unit with integrated magnetic stirrer for mounting either of the sample vessels TV 50 / TV 70 / TV 100.

OCA 20 Video-Based Contact Angle Meter

Measuring device for the software-controlled measurement and analysis of the static and dynamic contact angle, the surface free energy of solids and their components and the surface and interfacial tension based on the analysis of the drop shape

For the software-controlled measurement and analysis of the static and dynamic contact angle according to the Sessile and Captive Drop method the analysis of the drop shape according to the Pendant Drop method the wetting behavior on solid surfaces the surface free energy of solids and their components the surface and interfacial tension out of the analysis of the drop shape

The OCA 20 consists of the basic instrument with the following technical equipment:

		Dosing bay for installation of the optional manual syringe units and single or multiple (max. 4, optional 6) needle support with a vertical and horizontal fine adjustment
		Measuring stage adjustable in X-, Y- and Z- axis for accurate sample positioning
		Lens mount with adjustable tilt
		High-performance six-fold power zoom lens with an integrated continuous fine focus
		High-speed video system with adapter and CCD-camera
		High-performance video digitizing board (frame grabber) for the PC
		Halogen lighting with continuously adjustable intensity without hysteresis for a homogeneous back lighting
		Control and measuring electronics with built-in digital temperature display and serial RS 232C interface
		Power supply with automatic voltage adjustment

The 32 bit software SCA 20 developed for Windows NT/9x/2000 offers by various expansion steps:

		Control of the electronic syringe modules, the tilting base assemblies, wafer stages and temperature control units
		Static and dynamic contact angle measurement according to the Sessile and Captive Drop method
		Calculation of the surface and interfacial tension from the contours of pendant and sessile drops as well as of liquid lamellas on plates, rods and threads
		Calculation of the surface free energy of solids and their components (e.g. dispersion, polar and hydrogen bond force contribution, acid and base portions respectively) according to the theories of Wu, Zisman, Owens-Wendt, Extended Fowkes, Schultz 1 + 2, Fowkes, van Oss & Good (Acid-Base), Equation of States (EOS)
		Calculation of wetting envelopes from the surface free energy
		Statistics and measurement error analysis
